How do I show excerpts instead of full posts?

I never got a clear answer on this so I feel like now it is appropriate to ask the question here.
I am trying to make my WordPress display the list of blog posts with just the excerpts I select.
I am using the theme adaption. Right now, lists like category and archive pull the full posts in a list. Besides not being user-friendly, it is also not really SEO friendly and it makes reading my posts a chore. So far I have tried the More Tag. The problem I encountered with that is that the excerpt then appears inside the post at the top of my content, and it ruins the natural flow of my posts.
I am at a loss as to how to fix any of this. Can anybody help?

Excerpts created as described in the Excerpts support page don’t display on the blog page on all themes. Adaption is one of those themes on which this kind of excerpt doesn’t work on the blog page.
How do I show excerpts instead of full posts?
Many WordPress.com themes have a one-check option in the Customizer for displaying excerpts on the blog page instead of the full posts. Adaption doesn’t have that option.
So far I have tried the More Tag. The problem I encountered with that is that the excerpt then appears inside the post at the top of my content, and it ruins the natural flow of my posts.
The More tag may be placed anywhere within the content of the post, not only at the top.
Display Posts Shortcode, which may be inserted into a post, a page, a text widget, etc., is another option. It may be customized to include an excerpt, a featured image, and more.

Thank You. Can you point me towards any themes that give me the option to show excerpts? I had considered changing my theme soon anyway. I will try these other methods too.
