How do I start?

  • Unknown's avatar

When I click ‘start with free’ it asks me what domain I want, or if I already own a domain. So I click ‘already own a domain’ because I do, and it asks me to transfer to wordpress or map my domain, neither of which are free.

What I want to do is, I have an archived wordpress site that I want to upload to a server to see if it works, it doesn’t need to be on a custom domain, so I want to start with the free plan, and then if it works out then I would upgrade from the free plan to a paid plan and use my domain. But I can’t figure out how to start a free plan despite clicking on wordpress’s button that says ‘start with free’.

It seems like this should be simple, what am I getting wrong?

So I click ‘already own a domain’ because I do,

Don’t do that if you want a free site. Type a word or phrase where it says “enter a name or keyword”.

It doesn’t say “enter a name or keyword” anywhere. It says “type the domain you want here”. If I type in a domain there, it asks me if I own it or if I want to buy a similar one. If I say I own it, it asks me to transfer to wordpress or map my domain, neither of which I’m trying to do yet.

    Are you at https://wordpress.com/start/domains?ref=pricing-lp
Perhaps you need to clear browser cache if it is “remembering” something you added earlier.

Ok, thank you! I got back to the keywords part, and now I have the free site, thanks for your help!

I have a new question, if you know the answer. :) I imported my wordpress xml file, but when I launch the site it doesn’t show anything that I imported, it’s just a generic “welcome to your new site” page — how do I get my imported pages to show? They show in my account, under pages, but not on the public site.
