How do I start a new website without paying wordpress for a domain name?????

  • Unknown's avatar

I already have a domain name which I registered through namecheap. I want to start a new website with wordpress.com and attach that domain name to the new website. The system does not seem to allow me to do that. It seems to be insisting that I purchase a new domain name through wordpress or transfer my existing domain name to wordpress. Am I missing something or has wordpress changed so that one can no longer create a website for free with them?

    Hi,

You can map the domain to your free WordPress.com site instead of transferring it. Choose option 3. in the Add a Domain Name section of the Domains support page, or go directly to the Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping) support page for relevant information and instructions.

Go to the Create a Site page, https://wordpress.com/website-builder-website/, and follow the directions, opting for a free site when purchase options appear. After the free site is created, you may the existing domain to the site whenever you’re ready to do so.

    Hi Musicdoc1,

Ok. I was able to do it. The name they gave me added a long number in the name which is hard to remember. WordPress used to not do that. But I guess that is ok, since I have purchased a separate domain name which I can point to this new website.

    Thank you for your help.

    Vincent,

Sorry for the long delay :/

The name they gave me added a long number in the name which is hard to remember. WordPress used to not do that.

Normally that would only happen because the name you wanted wasn’t available, AND you choose the name with the random number added that they offered. So, while it may not have mattered in this case, for future reference note that it wasn’t necessary to accept the address with the number added, and in the case that you do inadvertently accept an address that you don’t want, you may easily change a free address as described in the Change a Site Address support page.

    Hi Musicdoc1,

Thanks for the response. I did eventually figure out that the reason for that long number in the name (for the web address) was that the name I originally wanted was taken. I have since taken a new web address and wordpress did not add a bunch of numbers to it.

    Regards,

    Vincent

Follow up comment: I changed to the new web address I think by exporting the material from the old one and then importing it into the new one. The method you provided in the link you sent in the Change a Site Address support page is much easier and more convenient. I am glad to know about that. Thanks for the info.
