How do I stop old site from being crawled by Google? It’s messed up my SEO.

Hi there. I have a big SEO problem. My original WordPress site was hosted by WordPress but I moved over to Elementor Hosting (which still uses WordPress) when I rebuilt the site. When the new site was ready, the DNS settings were changed to point to the new site, it went live, and its position at the top of Google was unchanged. All was OK, until now. In the past two weeks or so, this has all changed with my pages dropping down the rankings. It looks like my old website, which reverted to myname.wordpress.com, is now also/still being crawled by Google, evident from it being a ‘Referring page’ in Google Search Console. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that my search presence has dropped, especially because the search results look like a mish-mash of the old and news site. (After the new site went live and everything had propagated, the results were accurate for the new site. Now they look like they’re from the old one.)

What’s the best way to remove the old site (myname.wordpress.com) from being crawled? It is currently set to private, but that doesn’t appear to be enough. Will deleting it do the job or do I need to do more? Thanks for reading. I look forward to any suggestions.
