How do I switch from self-hosted to WordPress.com site?
-
I already have a wordpress.com account under this current username I’m logged in as but when I go to it it takes me to my self-hosted WordPress site. I am looking my hosting in a few days due to the hosting company closing and though I have a domain name already through someone else I was hoping to just switch to a free WordPress.com site, ie lifewithkadie.wordpress.com hosted on WordPress.com but I can’t seem to figure out how to do this? It’s kind of confusing since it’s already directing to hosting elsewhere when I log into WordPress.com. Any ideas on how I can achieve this? I know once it’s done I would need to upgrade to a paid account to use my own domain but honestly I might just let that go and stick with lifewithkadie.wordpress.com and a free account for now if I can get this figured out. Any help on how to do this would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi there,
Your WordPress.com username account you used to post here in the forums, and your admin user account you use to log into your self-hosted site, are two completely different accounts. It’s possible they have the same username, but that’s purely coincidental – one account exists on our servers, and the other exists on your current hosting provider’s servers.
To move your self-hosted site from your current host to us, you need to log into the site’s admin account, so you can access the WP-Admin dashboard. But I see there’s a complication:
It appears your domain, lifewithkadie.com, is already being redirected to your WordPress.com site. This means if you try to log into your admin account at lifewithkadie.com/wp-login.php, it takes you to the WordPress.com login page instead. But your site has no connection to WordPress.com, and you can’t access its dashboard from your username account with us.
A redirect like this can only be set up at your hosting provider, so please contact Ionos support and ask them to remove that redirect.
Once they’ve done that and you can access your lifewithkadie.com site again, log into WP-Admin, go to Tools ->Export, and get an export file of your content on that site.
Then come here to WordPress.com, go to My Site ->Tools ->Import, and upload that export file to lifewithkadie.wordpress.com. It will import all your posts, pages and comments from the self-hosted site, and then it will also attempt to transfer over any files in your media library. Note that for the media files to make it across, the lifewithkadie.com site will need to stay online and connected to the domain, else the media files won’t transfer.
Once you’re sure you’ve migrated everything you want to, it will be safe to take your old site offline, and restore the redirect or transfer/connect the domain to us.
Let me know if you have any questions about this.
