How do I tell my students to get into my blog so they can comment

  • Unknown's avatar

    I just made a blog (I think) but how do the students find it? will I be able to always edit their comments before it goes out to the public site? Sorry, I am really excited about this idea of having a site for them to chat about books they have read, but I really know very little about it, I attended a library conference and attended a workshop on this. I am not sure if I have officially begun this site although I can log into it/

    A blog is not a forum or a chat-room. If your set your blog comments up so they do not require moderation you will end up opening your comments to everyone who is online. The result will be spam comments some of which will have live links to porno sites, for example.

    This will be a lengthy response so please hang in while I gather some information for you which I will edit in as I find it.

    (1) I recommend that you do “moderate” all comments. Here is where to do this => Dashboard => Options => Discussion

    scroll down and carefully complete the check-boxes in the fields

    Usual settings for an article:
    (These settings may be overridden for individual articles.)
    * Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)
    * Allow link notifications from other Weblogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)
    * Allow people to post comments on the article
    E-mail me whenever:
    * Anyone posts a comment
    * A comment is held for moderation
    Before a comment appears:
    * An administrator must always approve the comment
    * Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
    * Comment author must have a previously approved comment

    When you gave completed these fields click “Update Options” to save them.

    (2) Setting aside the issue of your students making comments on the posts you make, if you so choose you can set up your blog so students can post and edit the posts they make.

    http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/12/what-are-the-different-roles/
    Be very cautious which roles if any that you choose to give your students.

    In this case the students have to register with wordpress but do not have to have their own blogs. The important point is that whatever email address they use to register with wordpress must also thereafter be the one that they log-in to the blog with.

    (3) Also you do have an option whereby you can set your blog up only to be seen by your students which you register on the blog, and not be seen by others at all.

    (4) Lastly you do have an option of password protecting some posts so only those you give the password to can open them and view them http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/23/post-options-post-password/

    WHEW! Hopefully this will give you a basic working knowledge of the options that are available to you.

    A blog is not a forum or a chat-room.

    Agreed but it depends on how the poster is planning on doing it. if he or she is planning on writing some review of the reading assignment and then asking for comments, the blog would work fine. If they’re wanting more interaction between the commenters and I don’t think that he or she is since the comments are going to be moderated, I’d lean more towards a forum.

    @drmike
    Do you think I covered all the bases well? Or should I have pointed to threads on forums too?
    And BTW your new avatar is cool. What does the full size version look like?
