how do I transfer a domain from another host to word press?

I currently have my domain registered with another host server but would like to transfer it to word press. Originally I wanted to map it to word press and paid the mapping fee but never followed through. There is only a couple weeks left on the other server. Please advise what steps in word press that I need to take.

WordPress.com does not accept incoming domain transfers but you can map an existing domain.
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog then you log in under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Thank you. I didn’t realize that word press does not accept in coming transfers. Does it make sense to let it expire with other company and then purchase it through word press? Or does it matter?

Letting a domain expire is risky business because the registrar can do what they want with the domain. They don’t have to offer it for sale and can auction it off or sell it to whoever they wish to. Timethief is correct, we currently don’t take incoming domain transfers. Instead you can map an existing domain to your WordPress.com blog, go to Store > Domains on your blog’s dashboard and follow the steps there.
Letting a domain expire means you completely give up ownership of the domain and can take up to 35 days before it will become available to register somewhere.
