How do I transfer my domains from iPage to WordPress?

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to correspond with someone at WordPress about transferring web hosting to WordPress. I’m not moving a blog. I have a WordPress blog which I would incorporate inside a website hosted by WordPress. I own two domains and would transfer both: harlanhague.us and softadventure.net.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I am getting the strong impression that WordPress does not have support people. Is that true? If so, I would never have my domains hosted by WordPress. Also, all I see on the site seems to suggest that WordPress is hung up on blogs and does little with domain hosting. Is that true? I can find no one at WordPress to ask these questions.

Note that WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible.

Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

    Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

No. Refer to http://en.support.wordpress.com/help-support-options/ knowing that using only one means contacting Staff per issue is what’s recommended. There are millions of bloggers here and pages of those who posted thread long before you did. Staff deal with all issues in threads, email tickets and reports in chronological order. Multiple contacts simply moves the date stamps further ahead in time and that means it takes longer to get help.

Does wordpress support a .us domain?

I tagged this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. Note there is a backlog so you will have to wait patiently for Staff help as they answer threads in chronological order based on datestamps.

    Hi Harlan,

So before I address your inquiry I would like to clarify one thing:

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities. At WordPress.com, we provide hosting, support, and tons of features for blogs. Users also have the option to purchase a variety of upgrades to customize the look and feel of their blog. WordPress.org is a software for self-hosted sites. With WordPress.org, users are provided access to all backend files and can upload custom themes and plugins.

Check here to learn more about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

So everything really depends on if you want to host with us at WordPress.COM. If you do want to host with us, as @timethief mentioned, while we do not accept incoming domain transfers, you can easily point to your WordPress.com site by updating the nameservers to us and purchasing the Domain Mapping upgrade ($13/year).

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

You would be able to map both of your domains to WordPress.com sites.

The only thing I’m confused about is this statement:

I have a WordPress blog which I would incorporate inside a website hosted by WordPress.

Reading this, it seems like you don’t want to host with us at WordPress.com. It seems like one of your sites is self-hosted and you want to incorporate your other site with your self-hosted site?

If this is the case, please note that I would not be able to help you with this as I have no access to your files on the self-hosted version – WordPress.org.

You can find support for your self-hosted WordPress site here:

If you need professional help for your self-hosted WordPress site, please check out:

You may also wish to contact your host’s support team for more assistance.

Let me know if this is not the case and you would like to host with us at WordPress.com!
