How do I turn off stats?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I’ve always liked the wp interface and look, but having returned from facebook, I find I not only don’t care about traffic but am annoyed by the desperationware surrounding it. I’d like to just turn it all off, and if people wander by and want to comment, that’s fine. But I don’t need (or want) to track what people are looking at, how popular it is, etc.

How? Thanks. (Please note that I am not inviting questions about why I don’t care and don’t want to be bothered by stats. Just take that part as given.)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you are on WordPress.COM – the stats are built in and can’t be turned off – your only option would be to not look at the states page

    sorry

Is there at least a way to hide the running statsmeter in the top bar when you’re signed in? The “please someone look at me” obsession/anxiety is just a real downer.

    thanks –

the Sparklines were an addition they were real proud of when they were added – so there is no way to turn them off I am aware of – I like them but yes on a slow day it can be a bit discouraging – my stats are very seasonal – high in the summer and ya well in the winter and no my stats are on a big slide down –

I have flagged this for staff attention so they can see that not everyone likes the Sparklines

Yeah, I mean the thing is — and this is important — it’s not even a matter of “my stats are sad” or anything like that, which just prompts these people to come windmilling at you with Tips for Boosting Traffic.

I don’t care about traffic and don’t want to be bothered by the stats or the stats mentality. <– The entire point.

It’s very difficult to get people, esp. millennials, to pry their hands off the notion that life is about clicks and eyeballs and attention and publicity. I genuinely believe that there’s an entire generation that believes it doesn’t exist unless crowds are watching. (Gen Z is not so afflicted, fortunately, from the looks of things.)

I find the whole attitude desperately sad, and really don’t want it as part of my online life. Hence question about how to turn off the “do you exist yet?” ticker.

You might have to explain it a few times to them, slowly.

    ta –

    @amycharles

If I understood correctly, you’d like to turn the Stats widget off at your wp-admin Dahboard? If that is the case, you’ll see screen options button (at the top right corner next to the help button). Just click it and uncheck Stats. That will remove the Stats widget. However, the statsmeter at the top bar will have to remain :)

I don’t care about traffic and don’t want to be bothered by the stats or the stats mentality.

Then do what I do and ignore the sparkline.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks, dakisha, will do.

timethief, if it were ignorable, I’d have done that. Unfortunately it’s well-designed and continues to oppress.

If you are alleging that the sparkline in any way interferes with your ability to blog then post a screenshot for Staff.

You can use http://snag.gy/ to share screenshots and link to them here. If you use the WordPress.com guide for screenshots http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ you can and upload it to your Media Library, and return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it.

If however you are just complaining that you cannot remove it from the Admin bar read the Terms of Service.

If you are actually alleging that the sparkline displayed in the front of your blog is “oppressing” you then I can only assume that English not your mother tongue, and/or that you are drawn to exaggeration.

Knock it off, timethief. Another thing I’m not fond of in social media: needlessly aggressive types looking for fights. I don’t like the sparklines and I told you why. You’re not happy with that, go play somewhere else. And if you want an example of actual helpfulness, look at dashika’s comment.

I can understand that the sparklines and stats displays could bother people – I have known some people in the past that information like that was an issue – I just respected them and did not mention certain things to them – – If @amycharles were a friend in my normal circle I would not ask about any stats on her blog, nor would I probably say much other than general things about mine (trending up in the spring, trending down in the fall – maybe an individual Post if it was really well received by people )

    @amycharles
I repeat that if you are alleging that your inability to disable the sparkline display on the front of the blog is interfering with your ability to blog then you need to bring that to Staff attention by providing Staff with a screenshot and accurate description of what’s happening on your end of things. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-do-i-turn-off-stats?replies=11#post-2495687 If that in fact is what you are alleging, then better still would be also providing this helpful information to Staff:

    (a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://supportdetails.com/
    (c) Exactly what you experience including what any error reports you receive state.

However, if you posted this thread just to complain that you cannot remove an element that’s on the front of the blog and does not interfere with your blogging that’s your prerogative but personal attacks are not allowed.

timethief: Please stop commenting now. You continue to miss the point. If others have helpful remarks, great, but I don’t wish to continue this conversation with you.

    thanks for understanding, auxclass.

  • Thanks for the feedback @amycharles, if I understand properly, the sparkline thing is just annoying to you, not literally getting in the way of you blogging. We’ll see what we can do. You probably could use a browser extensions and some CSS to hide it, if you’d like.

Do know in the meantime, though, no one else will see those stats. Only site members who have sufficient access will be able to see a sparkline. If you’re getting contact about your stats, it’s most likely just spammers gambling on the assumption that stats are a sensitive spot for you. So if you get comments like that, spam them. Or if you want us to take a look, let us know. We’d be happy to help however we can.

Hi, supernovia – thanks. If you know of any extensions offhand, I’d appreciate hearing about it.

I really don’t care who else sees the stats (although if they can see beyond that to where traffic is coming from, that seems invasive of readers’ privacy). I’ve had no contact about them. I just find the stats-obsessed, must-find-readers obsessed culture quite depressing and sad — so many people so anxious over whether or not total strangers are paying any attention to them, basing their self-worth on that, viewing thought and conversation as essentially a marketing exercise. Being unable to function without metrics (and metrics defined by others, too). I know the culture and these people’s anxiety exists, I just don’t want it in my face on my own blog.

I have no idea where some of the readers/commenters are coming from or how they’ve found their way to my blog, but that’s fine. They’ve left very thoughtful, articulate comments.

I have no idea where some of the readers/commenters are coming from or how they’ve found their way to my blog,

Lesson #1 – the internet works in strange ways for traffic – you have a review site – I would expect that someone might like a review and pass it on to friends – I pass on news and other things to my friends and others all the time – I will see a post sometimes that is a 1 or 2 page view a day jump to 12 in one day from time to time – people might find your site from a search engine or a friend

If you are curious about the source – look in the referrals section – sometimes that will give a hint

I don’t show the number of subscribers or total page views – why? don’t like bragging and I learned long ago that there is always someone better and someone worse – so lots of sites out there with more traffic and many with less –

The whole thing is to have fun – if you are not having fun – you are not doing it right – I am erratic with my posting – but I take pride in what I write and hope that others will find my site helpful – from time to time I will meet people that know my site and have visited it – sometimes they say thanks – makes me feel nice to know I have helped someone in some small way

Unless you put the Total Page Views Widget on your site – NOBODY other than a logged in user can see anything about your traffic

Good luck with your blog – and remember to have fun with it

Re comments – Akismet catches most of the spam – – my experience is that most comments are decent as long as you don’t have a political blog – political brings out the worst in flamers and other scum
