How do I unlink / de-map a custom URL from my wordpress.com account?
-
I created a custom URL for my wordpress.com site, and then later moved it to a hostgator-hosted wordpress.org instance. I’ve also moved the domain registration over.
Unfortunately, the wordpress.com site now has a pop-up reading: ‘Uh oh! Your blog’s domain algoso.org expired 4 days ago’—which isn’t true; the domain simply isn’t registered through wordpress.com anymore.
I’d like to get rid of that message (currently it’s seen by all visitors) and then unlink the two entirely so that I can post a ‘this blog has moved’ message on the wordpress.com site. Alternatively, I’d be happy to have the findwhatworks.wordpress.com URL automatically redirect to algoso.org, but I can’t seem to find a way to do that either.
How can I do this? I’ve poured through the support docs, and it seems like a staff person has to do this for you.
The sites: findwhatworks.wordpress.com
and algoso.orgThanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,
While logged into the account, on the notice that says “Uh no! This blog’s domain algoso.org expired”, click the “Cancel this domain” link. If the expiration notice still appears after doing that, close your browser completely, restart it and visit the page that had the notice/banner.Another option: Log into the WordPress.com account that you used to buy the upgrade. From your Dashboard go to Store > My Upgrades. Next to the domain, click the cog icon, then click the cancel link. Here’s more info about cancelling upgrades: https://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/#canceling-upgrades
If neither of those work, add “modlook” to the tags for this forum thread to let WordPress.com staff know that you need assistance with this issue.

Thanks, micawbr, but neither of those solutions seem to work.
On the first options: There is no “Cancel this domain” link on the “Uh no!” notice. I see text reading: “Uh oh! Your blog’s domain algoso.org expired 9 days ago!” followed by a link that reads: “Renew now for one more year” and more text below that reads: “Your blog’s domain algoso.org stopped functioning on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 and visitors who come to the web address algoso.org cannot find your site any more.”
On the second option: I don’t see the domain listed anywhere on the “My Upgrades” page. There’s just the text: “Looking to upgrade? Our plans give your site the power to thrive. Find the plan that works for you.” And a button that reads: “Upgrade Now.”
Thanks for the advice on tagging a moderator. Hopefully they can help.
Dave

Hi there,
It looks like the mapping record for your domain was still stuck in our system. I have removed that now, so you shouldn’t see that overlay any more.
