How do I update a document without changing links?
-
I have several documents in my media library that I want to update. I have many links to these documents in various Pages and Posts. How can I update the documents without changing the links to them? If I upload a new version of the document and delete the old version, it breaks all the links. Thanks in advance for any help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I recall you have asked this question previously. If you click “member” under your ysername you will find all the posts you have made to the forum.

The answer is: you can’t. If you create new versions of a document the software will recognize them and add numbers and dates to them.

if you update those documents WITHOUT changing their names (therefore keeping their same URL), you’re OK.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I reposted this because I couldn’t figure out how to find may previous post or any replies. Thanks for the hint.
Regarding the question, that’s too bad. It is really a pain to go thru all of my blog posts and pages looking for and changing all links to the document every time I upload a revised version. I always miss a couple and get questions about broken links. Oh well.

Gregg:
So how do I update a document without changing its name? Are you saying that if I upload a document that has the same name as a document already in the library, it will replace that document and not change its URL? So any existing links to it will now link to the update document? If so, awesome. Problem solved. Thanks.

that is correct, if you upload a document with the same name and extension, the old one will be replaced, therefore you get a fresh document and your links remain the same.

Sorry, the correct reply is the one given by timethief (and by justjennifer in the thread timethief linked to). “Name.doc” reuploaded will become “Name1.doc”; if reuploaded again, it will be “Name2.doc”, etc., even if you delete the previous version before uploading the new one.

Yes: I had tried it, and I managed to get the same name by reuploading an image weeks after deleting the previous upload. But if it’s not in the same month, the date in the permalink will be different anyway, as J and tt have already pointed out.

Yes, sigh…

As you’ve probably seen, so far there are 11 posts by this guy: all 11 of them wrong, useless, or irrelevant.

I’m guessing that he is in the wrong forum. Site linked to name shows this in source code:
content=”WordPress 2.9.1
Interesting that name is ‘Priest’ for a very un-Catholic sort of blog… -
Yeah, I also noticed the blog linked to his name was a wordpress.org blog and having viewed the contents I suspected he was posting as an undercover wordpress.org blogger seeking hits.
Yes, I’m that cynical because in these last 4 years I have seen it all more than once. Moreover, we are seeing more undercover spamming in our forums every day.

Well, I suppose if you can’t laugh at something, then you’d have to cry
bitch whine run hide ignore attack scream delete ex-ter-min-ate (daleks)
so many possibilities… -
Precisely, yesterday I have tried to do what “fredallandale” said, and the conclusion is what Panos has said here:
“Name.doc” reuploaded will become “Name1.doc”; if reuploaded again, it will be “Name2.doc”, etc., even if you delete the previous version before uploading the new one. -
