  • Hi,

On WordPress.com, we only allow themes that are in our list at http://themes.wordpress.com. For themes from third-party services, you’ll need to have your site self-hosted with WordPress.org.

For more information about WordPress.org and the difference between it and WordPress.com, we have a link at WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know. Thanks!

    Ah! Thank you kraftbj!

I knew I was missing a huge element. Can I switch over my domain name from wordpress.com to wordpress.org?

Truthfully I feel overwhelmed right now looking at wordpress.org. But I love a challenge, I just need to figure out how to get started. Any info on how to move my account over, etc would be really helpful.

  • Sure thing!

We have some information at Moving a Blog and Move Your Domain to Another Host.

By rule, domain names can’t be transferred to a different registrar in the first 60 days, so we can point the domain’s nameservers to your new host and then transfer it to a different registrar in about a month.

If you don’t have a host in mind, we have a few of the many, many options listed at http://get.wp.com/hosting/

If you have any specific questions, please let me know or drop at line at the WordPress.org support forums at http://wordpress.org/support/

    Cheers!

Thanks for the useful links. I am still a bit confused though.

I can’t transfer my domain for over a month. But I want to upload my Theme Forest theme and start learning how to build my website. You say that during the interim you can point the domain’s name servers to my new host. I don’t have a choice in that right? (If I want to use my new theme and still get it up and running.) Correct?

If I change my name server, can I still access my new theme and do all the customizations that my new theme enables me to do? Will I be customizing under wordpress.com or my new host?

If I point my name server now and register later, what problems will that cause when I want to register later?

  • Happy to help straighten things out. Domains were obviously thought up by technies who never thought regular, normal folks would want to use them :-)

With a website, there are two pieces to make it work: registering a domain name and hosting the website. Technically, these are unrelated pieces, though vendors, including WordPress.com, offer them together as a package to make it easier for most folks.

No matter where your domain name is registered, it needs to point to a webhost to actually send folks to. By default, since you bought your domain name from WordPress.com, we point it to our own hosting.

When we change where your domain is pointing to everything will be with the new host (except the actual domain name registration).

To use the Theme Forest theme, then, yes, we do need to point your domain to a new host of your choosing. On the new host, you’ll upload your theme to the WordPress.org install and manage everything from there.

There aren’t any issues with changing the nameservers now and transferring to a different registrar later. When transferring to a different registrar, the nameserver values are transferred over so there is no disruption to your site.

Please do let me know if you have any other questions!

Ok. I’ve purchased a host from Dreamhost. I went to http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/ and followed directions up to where I entered a PIN. However, where it says name servers is grayed out and won’t let me click on it.

    What do I do?

By the way, you’re awesome! I really appreciate all the info.

  • Anytime!

When you get to http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/editns.jpg?w=688 , if the Edit Nameservers link isn’t active, try “toggling” it between “Standard” and back to “Custom”.

If that doesn’t work, what are the nameservers provided by Dreamhost?

    Thanks!
