If you already have a domain that you registered elsewhere, and you want to map that domain to your free hosted WordPress.com blog follow these instructions > http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
After you make the domain mapping purchase and do the set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ -
This should do it:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Remember – changes usually start in a few hours but can take 24 to 72 hours to reach the far corners of the internet

Thanks. I’m new to this. I registered a domain name “www.parentingandattachment.com” with Godaddy where I already have an account. When I opened the WordPress account I typed in my domain name and was informed something like “already in use.” Because I own it! I typed in a different name as a placeholder “jrbcomcast.wordpress.com” figuring I could change it. I also went to the links suggested and followed instructions for changing name servers at Godaddy. At this point should I wait to see what comes back? Not sure what next step is.

No Domain Mapping Found
There is no domain mapping upgrade for parentingandattachment.com. If you would like to use this domain you will first need to set up domain mapping.
It does not look like you bought the domain mapping – there is a delay sometimes – but did you purchase domain mapping for parentingandattachment.com?
You want the mapping not purchasing a name – the mapping can be to any blog you want

I thought I already set up domain mapping from what I did at Godaddy. I didn’t “buy” anything, just input their name servers as instructed. What am I missing? Yes I don’t want to purchase a name, I already own the name I want.

Doesn’t matter what you do at GoDaddy: you can’t map an external domain to a WP.com blog without the domain mapping upgrade purchased here.

You changed the name servers at Godaddy – but you also need to purchase domain mapping here – that matches up your blog name to your domain name – $ 13.– / year here
Please follow the instructions I gave you above

Thanks all for your help. I purchased the domain mapping and and made changes to the GoDaddy servers. So now my site address is as I want it – http://www.parentingandattachment.com. Now I have 2 questions:
1. When I click on my website address above in the dashboard I get the message “Not Found.” I assume that’s because I haven’t published the site yet?
2. How do I change my dashboard address (jrbcomcast.wordpress.com) to match my site address so everything’s consistent? -
Not Found
Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here.1. answer
By default the front page of your blog displays all posts. The 404 (page not found) error message on the front page of the blog appeared because the Admin of the blog deleted the placeholder Hello World post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/not-found/ As soon as you publish a post, not a page it will disappear. Read the differences between Pages and Posts.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/2. You cannot chnage that and what ever you do do not start messing with links. You are domain mapping. The content is situated at jrbcomcast.wordpress.com and you are mapping form the .wordpress.com URLS which visitors do not see to the domain URLs whcih they do see. The Admin side of the blog which you see will reflect the .wordpress.com URLs. That’s normal.

OK so I guess when I first publish the error message will go away. Meanwhile I’ll leave the dashboard address alone as long as all that’s publicly visible is my blog address. Thx!
