How do I use an existing domain?
-
I currently have a website, but its old. I want to make a new one using wordpress. How do I bring my existing domain name to this site? I want to spend the next couple months creating it, keeping my current site live until the new one is ready.
Any help much appreciated.

Hi Brenda,
Assuming that you own the domain, you have a couple of options. One, you can transfer your domain to WordPress. To do so, you will need to upgrade from a free WordPress.com account. Pricing options & benefits are available here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

The other option is to map your domain to a WordPress.com account. This also requires an upgrade to a tiered plan but does not require domain transfer.

Brenda,
My apologies – In researching further, I see that mapping your domain only requires a fee, not upgrading to a paid tier. The information is on the “map existing domain” link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Sorry for the mistake.

@slodaniel, you were correct the first time. Mapping also requires a plan.
Each paid plan comes with a free domain credit you can use to either register a new domain, or either transfer or map one you already own. You can map as many additional domains to the same site as you would like, but you have to pay for additional mapping upgrades separately.
The mapping fee only is charged when you already have a paid plan and have used the domain credit, and cannot be used as a standalone upgrade.
