    I have heard that the correct use of keywords,words in the text of the blog that are somehow highlighted , greatly increases traffic to one’s blog. But I do not know how to do this, or if it is possible for a wordpress.com blog.
    Could you advise me, please?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Keywords are helpful to readers and search engines alike to help them understand what your post is about. If your website is about ‘how to train dogs’ you will want posts about ‘how to train dogs’ linking to to your site. It is worth using the keyword in the URL, title and first paragraph and naturally throughout the text but don’t put it in too many times as it makes it difficult to read and makes it look spammy to readers and search engines.

    Thanks a lot, zenplugs, for that tip. On my basic wordpress.com set up, is there any way of highlighting them specially, or is it just a case of
    putting in the words themselves, ie, ‘people believe that to train dogs is easy’ or some such? Thanks again.

    You don’t need to highlight them in order for them to work effectively as keywords. If you are using them in the title or header it is worthwhile making sure the header tags are set up properly so they are recognised, other than this, no special highlight is required.

    Hey, that is handy. I’ll watch out for that and see if I can drive up traffic. Thanks again for all your help.

    Hi there,
    When creating your site there are two types of keywords. The first is called meta keywords. These are the type of keywords I believe you were referring to in your original question.

    Back when search engines started to become popular these were added to the <head> aspect of your site to tell the search engines the content of your site. They looked something like this:
    <meta keywords="cats, kittens, animals">
    However, as the Internet has evolved these type of keywords are no longer used by major search engines. In fact, the keyword element is no longer on the list of tags that Google understands. Source: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/79812?hl=en

    The second type of keywords, the ones that zenplugs mentioned, are “in text” keywords. This means that they are contained inside the body of your post

    I love my cat Skittles I have had her ever since she was a kitten. Aren’t animals great?

    This has all the same information as our meta keywords above but now search engines can “see” or read the content in context.

    Of course, search engines are always getting smarter so it’s important to focus on writing great content and not focusing too much on search engines. We have a few great articles on Search Engines at WordPress.com here:

    Let us know if you have other questions or we can help you with anything else.

    @lucindaelliot
    Learning some basic search engine optimization (SEO) begins with understanding keywords and how and where to use them in your Site Title, in your article titles and within the text of your articles. I hope article titled Keyword Power in the Blogging World will be helpful.

    I’ll take a look at that, thanks, timethief. I’m very impressed with all these helpful replies.
