If you would like to map to a domain that you own from your wordpress.COM blog you will first need to set up domain mapping.

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is.It does not have to match the domain URL.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

    Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase upgrades for the blog.

If you own a domain then see here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

This seems to be the only place where I can ask questions of WordPress.com ….. So, here goes, I currently have a WordPress blog “jaykrause.wordpress.com” which I have not used for some years ….. I’m now looking registering the domain name “jaykrauseharleyrider.com” with WordPress, purchasing a “Premium” hosting package and transferring my existing blog with the exact same current black and Orange theme to the newly purchased website …… can I do this, it must be the same theme as it is for the current blog

Do you want to keep the content at jaykrause.wordpress.com and start adding new content to the blog?

If so no need to move anything – just register the domain name “jaykrauseharleyrider.com” and map it to jaykrause.wordpress.com – the new address shows up like magic with the old content – no need to move anything – domain mapping covers up the base blog address and the old URL’s also keep working

For a bit more class you could register jaykrauseharleyrider.wordpress.com then map jaykrauseharleyrider.com – you might then need to transfer the contents to the new blog if you want to keep the old content

    so a couple of options

You can pick from over 200 themes here – easy to change

Wow, thanks “auxclass” for such a prompt response ….. Yes, I do want to keep both the content and the existing theme and appearance from jaykrause.wordpress.com (which I just love) where the actual blog is titled “Jay Krause’s Harley Weblog” and start adding new content during the year as I ride to more events in Australia and later throughout the USA and do Sturgis again …… although I now will change that title to “Jay Krause Harley Weblog” and then, to keep it simple register the domain name “jaykrauseharleyweblog.com” (which is available) though WordPress for USD$18.00 and as you say, map it to “jaykrause.wordpress.com” and upgrade to Premium for USD$99.00 ….. then all should work smoothly and I can simply push the website “jaykrauseharleyweblog.com” on Facebook etc …. thanks again, much appreciated

If you register the domain $5.-/yr and Map the domain $13.-/yr total of $18.-/yr – – that is all you need for the name – no need to add the $99.-/yr unless you really want some of the $99.- features – you can save some money – look at the $99.- package details and see if you really want them

also note that the domain registration and domain mapping are part of the $99.- package so no need to buy the same thing twice –

you be welcome & good luck
