how do I use wordpress for business?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I see ads like this

    http://www.expand2web.com/blog/why-use-wordpress-to-power-your-small-business-website/

    http://www.expand2web.com/blog/why-bluehost/

My original understanding was that wordpress did not allow any commercial applications. So I have just a blog.

My son has a business, and i would like to use wordpress somehow to set up a website. but I am confused about the rules.

now I am reading that wordpress can be used to set up a business website.

can you explain this, the rules, and give me links to read as to how to proceed?

I was hoping to find the link for direct support from wordpress, but all I can find is this community button. Did they do away with private tech support ?

    thank you.

I think you ought to read the information at the links I post below. There are many buisness blogs here at WordPress.com http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/ but e-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by WordPress.com.

There is an advertising program called WordAds. It’s for blogs on their own domains http://en.wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads/ Other than being accepted into WordAds no blogger initated advertising is not allowed at WordPress.com. Retailing or reselling the work or products created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is not allowed on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs.

If your son requires an ecommerce site, advertising and/or affiliate links you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Did they do away with private tech support ?

In March Staff decided to close the support link to all users except those who have paid upgrades so they could clear up their backlog. That has not changed. When posting here to this peer support forum in the majority of cases Volunteers provide the answers to support questions. When we experience issues only Staff can deal with we flag threads for Staff attention and they provide the support that’s needed.

re: I see ads like this
WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. Many bloggers do not know this because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also note that as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in, and as many use browsers with ad blockers when logged out, they may not realize they are there at all. The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade.

Thanks. I think I am still a little confused.

My son’s business is just a roofing company. He makes metal panels to go on metal roofs, and puts on the roof.

He is not going to have shopping carts. I am not sure, but I do not think this fits the definition of e commerce. There will be no exchange of money on the site.

He will just have basic information about his business, a portfolio, showing some of his work, work credentials, and a contact email.

Since I consider his whole site an “ad” I am confused about how WordADs fits into this.

a business site IS an advertisement unless you mean other people advertising on his site

anything he is advertising is his own work…he makes the panels from a roll of metal, and then he puts on the roof…..so this means he should not “advertise” the source of the metal? (brand name?)

so I i just want a “business blog” do I just proceed as if I would a personal blog?

There are many business blogs here at WordPress.com and your son’s business will fit the types of blogs allowed http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/ Yes, you proceed just like you did when you set up your own blog.

    thank you.

he just mentioned and inquired about using “ad slicks” which are the sources of the materials that he is using. His customers can buy their products through him.

He is certified through these companies as an

      installer.

For example he is GAF certified. GAF supplies roofing products, such as roof panels, and shingles. The materials have to come from somewhere that the installer uses. the customers can buy the products directly, which is rare, and he installs them, or they can let him purchase them and install them. If they buy directly from them, then he does not make money on the materials, but just on the installation.

So people can get the products through my son, who will be the installer of this brand name company. He had to get training to be able to get this certification.

If this is a problem, we will not put ad slicks on there.

this is his way of informing people of the brand name materials he is using, to assure them he is using a good quality product.

I flagged this thread so Staff will continue this dialog with you.

  • That would count as advertising.

We do have an advertising program called WordAds, which you can apply for at http://en.wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads/

Advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.com is not allowed. For full details, please see:
    http://support.wordpress.com/advertising/
    http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

If you require other advertising, you might be interested in a self-hosted (WordPress.org) installation. There are no restrictions on advertising if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities.

Please see this link to learn about the differences:
    http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

We have hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested:

    Hosting

Generally speaking, however, the money earned from ads does not counterbalance the cost of hosting elsewhere. It might be more economical and less hassle to host here without any advertising at all.

For a business site I generally recommend the Custom Domain and No Ads upgrades.

I think I would like to keep it easy for me, and have a simple website. Is there a way to have someone review what I do to make sure I meet the guidelines for a non advertising site? just to make sure I do not accidentally cross any lines.

we just want a contact site…..we do use products that belong to other people , example metal we use to make the metal roof panels, but we are not trying to advertise for them,…they can do that for themselves.

I suggest you rough out the site and then ask staff, via your dashboard help button, to check it out and see if it’s okay. As long as you are marketing your SERVICES and not those third party products, and not taking paid ads, you should be fine.
