How do I view my own private blog?

I changed my settings to private, and then all of my blog pages weren’t visible, even to me. I had to go into the dashboard and click on the pages to make sure they were still there. Then I changed the privacy settings back to public and could view my own blog. I don’t understand this. Should I be able to view my own blog even if it’s private?
