How do previous viewers of my blog know when I’ve posted a new blog?

Do I need to do anything in addition to publishing my new blog post? ie Do I have to inform friends that there’s a new post?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You don’t have to tell them, but we do try to make it easy for you to tell them that if you want to. You can set up your site to automatically post something on your Facebook or Twitter account when you publish new posts.
You can also invite your friends to follow your site via email, or through the reader.
