How do Private Pages work?

A friend and I have set up http://thelinkening.wordpress.com, and we will be adding users occasionally. We’d like to set up a page that participants can view but that others cannot.
Ideally, this would be a private page; while a password protected page would work, we would prefer to not introduce an extra layer of authentication, particularly one that could be easily breached (no, this isn’t going to contain missle launch codes or the location of Jimmy Hoffa, but we’d like some security nonetheless).
We’ve tried setting up a private page, but the only way we can find to view the page is to open it for editing. While this option is acceptable, it’s not ideal. My question is, can private pages be viewed in some other way, either through the dashboard or through the main blog site?
