How do private sites work?
-
I can’t find a good help page or in the forum exactly how private sites work. This page has some info: https://wordpress.com/support/user-roles/
If your blog is private, nobody will be able to follow it unless you specifically invite them, at which point they become a Viewer.
If you want others to be able to view your private blog (and leave comments, if you’ve enabled them) you’ll need to invite them to be a viewer. What I really want is someone to request access. Is this not possible? I really expected that if something is private, they’ll see a message and can then request access. Is that not possible?

Hi there, when a WPcom site is marked Private by its owner, only people the site owner invites or someone who requests access and is approved by the site owner will be able to view the Private site after logging in to their WPcom account. If they do not have a WPcom account, they will need to register one.

Thanks justjennifer for this and all your other answers! That’s the support page I was looking for.
One other related question – can I also change a setting so that the request for approval goes to an Admin and not just site owner? That would be helpful if e.g. site owner is on vacation.

You’re welcome. It’s not possible to have that access request sent to someone else. But having said that, you should be able to set up your email program to forward such requests to a different email account.
However, the only site I see under this account you are posting from to the WPcom community forums is not hosted here on the WPcom platform and things here operate a little differently than hosting the WP software on 3rd party hosting like BlueHost, SiteGround and the like. You can learn more about that here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/
In case you need help with a WP site you’ll want to head over to the documentation and forums at https://wordpress.org/support/

That’s a good point – I’ll consider the mail forwarding. My question is related to a site I’m helping with that’s hosted on wordpress.com.
