How do tags work?

  I haven’t been tagging posts because I didn’t know what they do. Do they help with SEO?

  Yes, tagging posts helps with SEO (provided the tags are relevant to the post), and it also helps to organize your posts for your readers.

  Yes they do provided you only relevant Tags and Categories and you use only a minimal combined number of Tags and Categories on your posts. The classic mistake new bloggers make is spamdexing and that amounts to using too many Categories and Tags as well as those that not directly related to the blog content.

  The search spiders trace keywords in titles, headings, sub-heading, categories and tags and compare them to what’s in the content in the posts. If they don’t find the keywords in the content then the tagging and categorizing is not substantiated and they spiders COUGH – SEO gaming! This thread contains lots of useful advise on effective tagging and categorizing of your posts. Pages cannot have tags and categories assigned to them.
