How do viewers of private blogs get notified of new posts?

  Do viewers of private posts get notifications of new posts by an email notification or do they have to sign into word press to see new content?

  I am a viewer of but do not receive email notifications of new blog posts, I can only access them when I log in to the word press site. can I change this?
