How do you add a new attachment to a home page for a photo?

    I have searched & searched and watched youtubes & cannot find step by step instructions on how to add a new attachment to a theme page I am trying to customize. I am using the Nucleare Free theme & I am wanting to add a photo of ourselves to show up on the left hand side above our heading of RECENT POSTS. We are new to wordpress. Can anyone help me with clear instructions? Thanks :)
