How do you count views by a visitor?

How does wordpress know how many views one visitor makes? How does it count them? How can it tell when someone is looking at a different post?

A view is counted when a visitor loads or reloads a page. A visitor is counted when we see a user or browser for the first time in a given period (day, week, month).

When I look at my own blog (when I’m logged in) it looks like one continual page–I just scroll down to the next entry. Is it different when someone else looks at it? Must they click on each individual entry?

Your blog’s front page shows an overview of all you latest blog posts. Scrolling down automatically loads new posts. When clicking on the post title you go to the individual post page.

Thanks for trying to explain this to me. I’m still not getting it. In order for a “view” to be counted, must they click on the post title? Do visitors only see titiles? Are they seeing something different than what I’m seeing? I see continual posts and can scroll and look without clicking on anything. That’s why I’m puzzled about how they count what someone else looks at.

I see the exact same thing you are seeing. Views on your front page are counted as a view towards the front page. When someone clicks on your post title, the view is counted towards the individual post.
You can use the More Tag to only show a portion of the post on your front page. This way users have to click on the more tag or post title to view the individual post and read the full content of it.

Thank you. SO–they could go to my blog, and read the whole thing by scrolling (without clicking on any particular post) and it would count as ONE view? Sorry to keep asking. I’m new at this. Thanks.

That’s correct. By using the ‘More Tag’ you can truncate your blog entries so that only the first part of certain posts is displayed on the home and archive pages. When you do this, a link will be placed directly after your excerpt, pointing the reader to the full post instead.
