How do you create a category page with sub-categories?

I would like to create a page on my menu for recipes. Then I would like to have a list of categories appear on that page once you click on it (i.e.: entree, salad, breads, desserts) and once you click on the category you desire, it will take you to those posts. For instance, How Sweet It Is has what I’m talking about, http://www.howsweeteats.com/recipes/
And then when you click on desserts it looks like this http://www.howsweeteats.com/recipes/desserts/
Is there a way to do that with the theme that I have? If not, could you suggest a theme that will support that type of menu/category list?

This is an example of a category URL http://thistimethisspace.com/category/food/
This is an example of sub-category URL http://thistimethisspace.com/category/food/recipes/The easy way to do this is to create a cusom menu. Add the categories and sub-categories pages to it and create the sub-categories order.
