How do you get people to visit your blog?

I know, I know [said she holding her gut and rolling on the floor] …
echo chamber … yet each repeat is presumed unique *lol* and sarcasm offered for the sake of amusement (laughing at one’s self) isn’t even detected …

Debate over or post some outrageous ideas over subjects like religion, politics or sports ;)

    Technorati works well for me.

Don’t forget to “claim your blog”, put tags in the fields supplied by technorati at their site, and use a tag generator for your posts. Blogdesk editor has an excellent one built in even if you don’t post with it and just generate tags.

    Online there’s http://www.ultraseeker.com/tagbuilder/index.php

What about Digg? I’ve shown up there a couple of times, but I’m wondering if it’s a community? I know nothing about it, though. If it is a real community, joining and contributing would probably be worthwhile.

I removed all of the spelling posts from this thread. A friendly reminder that some of us have physical issues with being able to spell correctly. I let folks get away with a lot around here but I will draw the line on calling out people’s spelling when it’s not needed.

Don’t make me sick TT on you all. :)

    One more time:

I will draw the line on calling out people’s spelling when it’s not needed

    drmike,

Sorry. Didn’t understand the english phrase “calling out people’s spelling” and I tought just the opposite.

    It wasn’t my intention :(

    Cheers!

I feel that when u start to write any content in ur blog, u should keep in mind that there is an audiance ur addressing to and hence one needs to be vigilant enough, not to let down his readers. so whatever u write abt, just make sure u give it ur best and leave the rest to readers.

The best way to get people to visit your blog is to write good content.

Comment on other people’s blogs, email similiar type sites and ask for a link exchange on each other’s blogrolls, and if you use other sources like stories and pictures, link back with a clickable link so they’ll hopefully see it in their referrals and link back to you one day.

Or you could follow ~Engtech’s advice…I look for his posts, so I can see the kitten(!).

Almost immediately after I created a WP blog I got a Google PageRank of 5, which, frankly, I think is stupid because –a few reasons, but seems to be: blog name (apparently unique) subject (politics, media, events of my city), category and tags –I list a LOT of tags so the Googlebot can crawl my content and list blog under several searches. (In one search: a single post is listed above city’s police department Home page –that’s dumb.)

So two ways to go: wide appeal, to many, or narrow niche audience. For niche appeal: follow others’ advice:
-find Forums, Bulletin Boards, related blogs and post meaningful comments WITH your blog’s address

-post often, at least once a day; the bots will start checking more often, for current content, then Peeps will trickle in.

You didn’t ask, but: change the Poll –TO something about the READER, Not the writer.

My cat weighs over 25 pounds and can reach his paws over the counter when standing… I think “kitten” is a gross understatement. :)

Heck, I won an X-box 360 because he’s so fat.

You know, I did a study a couple of years ago and it turned out that the quality of the content bore no relation whatsoever to the hit count.

    None. I. Am. Serious.

It’s very much like Chris Whittle said; he financed a study and found that the quality of writing in a magazine had no effect on circulation. Just look at US Weekly vs The New Yorker circ stats for confirmation.

Find something popular and make sure the people who are interested in that know about you.

~Drmike: “Tens and twentys are always a plus as well”
    Please translate. What is that?

~Raincoaster: “quality of the content bore
no relation whatsoever to the hit count”

I’ve thought about that. It’s not credible, at first glance, but then: if the topic important, urgent, hot/timely or appealed to reptilian part of the brain –celebrity gunk –gossip –Oprah –sex, obscene, etc., you’re probably correct, there’s enough teens, shut-ins, bored, morons who would click. But: would they return?

But if the content was relevant, important or rewarding on deeper level –did you research if clicks resulted in repeat visits?

I mean: you can’t possibly be correct –why would people create/visit/post in Forums, Bulletin Boards; comment on posts? If blogs with quality content posted day after day, but zero amount of traffic, they wouldn’t keep on. DailyKos: writes quality content –and gets so many visitors he had to add more servers.

So: what does your research say, how to increase readership of content that isn’t “hot”?
