How do you get the blog feature image to show on main page?

My main page shows my blog postings, but it is not showing the image as well? How do I get that to show up?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

The default homepage which displays posts in reverse chronological order can not have a featured image assigned to it. It may have a header image assigned. Is that what you mean? Which theme is the site using?

Thanks, I got it figured out.

One more question: When I changed the theme for my website to Rowling, it transferred over my blog entries but didn’t transfer them over to the blog tab. So they are just hanging out there as blog posts, but with no home. How do I transfer them to the blog page? Is there a better way than just copy and pasting, because that will mess up the creation dates?

So they are just hanging out there as blog posts, but with no home.

I’m not sure what you mean. Your front page is set to display your posts page, as set at Customize > Static Front Page > Front page displays > Your latest posts. Your menu item “Blog” links to a static page with the title “The Story Begins” (slug=”blog”). That page wouldn’t have displayed your posts page on another theme either, unless it had been assigned to do so at Customize > Static Front Page.

Is there a better way than just copy and pasting, because that will mess up the creation dates?

Copy and paste what? To where?

Note also that the menu item “Home” links to an introductory page titled “Home,” but it is not your homepage. Your present homepage, or front page, is the the posts page, displaying posts in reverse chronological order.

Ok, I think I am understanding now. On my previous format my blog page hosted all of my posts and my front page did not show my recent posts. So in the Rowling format, is there really no need for a blog page if you make the front pg show your post? Also, is there no way to show an excerpt of the blog post, only the title?
    Sorry to be a hassle!

On any WordPress.com site, regardless of the theme applied, the default blog page isn’t a static page. You can’t find it among your static pages, and you can’t delete it, or edit it. What you can do is assign it’s only function (to display the posts page) to a static page. However, if you do so, then the content of the static page will not be displayed, nor will its title. For example, if you assign either the page titled “Home” or the page titled “Blog” as your posts page, then the content of the page and its title will be hidden, as it will simply take the place of the default blog or posts page.

Ok, that clears things up for me thank you!

  • Unknown's avatar

You’re welcome! I hadn’t seen your previous post. So I’ll respond to that here.

So in the Rowling format, is there really no need for a blog page if you make the front pg show your post?

On any theme, the default “Blog” page is unnecessary if the front page is set to display your latest posts. Perhaps when you changed the theme your settings were changed, at Customize > Static Front Page. I wouldn’t think that merely switching to another theme would have that result, but perhaps it does.

Also, is there no way to show an excerpt of the blog post, only the title?

You posts page presently displays only the titles (plus categories, published dates, and comments links) of your posts. Did you mean on single posts?

  • Unknown's avatar

Also, is there no way to show an excerpt of the blog post, only the title?

Oh, you want to include excerpts with the titles, correct? What is displayed on the posts page by default is largely dependent upon the theme design. A theme may display full posts, excerpts, or just the title on the posts page. I’d suggest you look for a theme which displays excerpts by default.

Including excerpts on the posts page with a theme that displays only the titles by default, if possible, might require CSS customization. Which is available only with paid plans. See the Custom CSS support page.

If you choose a theme which displays full posts by default on the posts page, then you may use More tags to shorten them. Simple add a More tag to each post to truncate the displayed portion of the post on the posts page, as described in the More Tag support page.

You might try adding an excerpt to a post as described in the Excerpts support page. I don’t know if it will display on the posts page with Rowling.

  • Unknown's avatar

    ok, thanks!

I read your forum re: pics for each blog post, but still don’t understand because as you look at the theme on the page to pic a theme it shows pics under the header for blog posts… but couldn’t find the way to recreate that once I had actually uploaded the new theme.

    @sofiasdesk,

    Hi,
This forum topic is not about “pics for each blog post.” It’s primarily about the difference between the having the posts page display on the default blog page vs. having it display on a chosen static page. I’d suggest that you begin a new forum topic, and when you do so try to explain your issue more clearly. For example, name the specific theme you are referring to when you say “as you look at the theme on the page to pic a theme it shows pics under the header for blog posts…” That certainly doesn’t apply to every theme.

The present topic is also in part about redundant or unused pages and menu items, and post excerpts.
