How do you know about referrers?

This question is motivated solely by curiosity. How is it possible for WordPress to know the Referrers to my blog? If I post the link in an arbitrary page, it will know the link came from there?

No, it says nothing about how WordPress knows what site brought an user to my site.

Part of the internet information is where a link comes from. That information can be captured and displayed. I also have a non-WordPress.com site and there is a feature called “Latest Visitors” and it captures all the links into my site. That page told me that I was getting a lot of traffic to one page on my site from Sweden (I am in the U.S.). one day. There are also reports on all the links to my site as well as every page that is displayed. It also has the IP number of where you come from and that can be reversed much of the time.

The exact mechanics are magic to me. WordPress.com displays a subset of the information on your site. But the data packets need a from and to address to get to your computer from a web site that you visit.

So each time you visit a site or click on a link there is a record of what you did saved some where as well as probably our NSA as there are reports of massive data logging by the U.S. Govt. on all internet traffic.

So Smile you are on candid web :)

What you say sounds like a conspiracy theory to me. It is infeasible, if not impossible, for any organization to log every link click on the web. It makes no sense, this traffic can not be centralized. Also, there is no way to relate where the link came with the bare HTTP protocol mechanics. Only the client can tell explicitly where he came from, there is no third party that can knows about the transaction.

What I want to know is what it the protocol for informing that, and if the browser is aware of it or it is done by means of javascripts on the referrer.
