How do you list & organise just the titles of the blog?
-
Hello – I have 2 related questions:
First: I recently created a page for recipies on my blog, and instead of showing the entire blog in chronological order, I want to just have a list of titles and the link to the blog. Eventually as I build up my recipie database I want to organise it into sections eg Pasta, Poultry, Meat…etc etc etc
Secondly, when you get to my homepage I don’t want to show the entire blog but rather a snippet and people can chose to ‘read more’.
I have trawled through all the ‘help’ pages and gone through all the options that i have available on my dashboard – but i can not seem to figure this out!
Thank in advanced for any help/advise that may be offered!
Kind regards,
AlexThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The first thing is probably going to require making and updating pages manually unless you are willing to switch themes. The following links from Panos’ blog should help. Sorry I”m not including the http:// at the beginning, but if I do with several external links, the spambot will grab me and toss me into the dungeon.

wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/25/the-excerpt-function/The best way to organize posts is using categories, and then use the categories widget, or add the categories to a custom menu. That will create the listings of the posts.
For the main page, use the read more tag in your posts.

Thank you so much for your tips and advise – I will give this a go and will let you know how it goes! Thanks for taking the time!
Best, alex

Well, I’m snookered. I’m just starting a blog, would like to set up two categories within it – Yoga – Sculpt. I want people to just click on one or the other, and the posts for that category will drop down so they can click on the blog they want to read. Since there is only one post under each category, it should be easy to figure out but I don’t understand which widget comes first in the side panel. I put in the post and then try to put in category (I’ve tried and when I click on the category widget the post widget goes away), and when I put in the category I can’t add the post. Help!!!

So i have fignured out how to do the “read more” options for my post. Thanks TheSacredPath for a very good website.
However, I still can not figure out how to get the index of the blogs I want under my ‘Recipies’ page. I did try the [archive] for the page and it worked to an extent, but it included ALL the blogs and I can’t figure out how to just select the recipie one…
Anyfurher help would be greatly appreciated!
Best,

@alexdaintry, you are either going to have to use the standard categories pages and live with the format that it has on your theme, or you are going to have to create your own index of recipes manually in a static page and then manually update it when you add new recipes.

@jlsfitu, dropdowns for posts can become unwieldy and difficult to navigate very quickly since the number of posts in a category typically grows as you create more posts. I have a category on my blog with over 100 posts in it. A dropdown for that would overwhelm visitors and turn them off.
You can create a tab in a custom menu and then manually add the posts underneath that tab in a custom menu. Generally as a web and graphic designer, I try and keep dropdowns to under 5 or 6 items unless it is absolutely necessary. I agree with the author of the web design book “Don’t Make Me Think” by Steve Krug. Always keep things simple and easy to navigate.

Okay. I only plan on posting once a week, and wanted to keep only 4 posts on the main page under the category. I had planned on moving all the “old” posts to the archives at the end of the month. Is that possible?

The archives here aren’t really archives in the true sense. They are just a listing of posts by year, month or day,so they will always be listed in the normal blog pages, but further back.
If you use the custom menu and create a tab for the category, and then put posts under that tab, you are going to have to delete the older posts manually from the menu to get them off the dropdown.
The functionality you are looking for is what is found in a full-fledged CMS, not in blogging software. This functionality can either be programmed into a self-hosted wordpress blog, or perhaps there are even some plugins that will do this.
The major problem with truly archiving posts (or setting them back to drafts or to private) after a week or so is that the search engines will typically have already indexed the posts, and when they disappear, the search engines will get a 404 not found error, and when they get too many of those stacked up, they get cranky and typically will stop indexing your blog till the 404 error issue is cleared up, so be very careful and thoughtful before taking anything off your blog that has been there for more than an hour or so.

I’m sorry – i see that it says this post is resolved – but I still have a further question. I really not very technical and have no idea how to create my own index manually on a static page to then update them when necessary.
I tried to do it yesterday by using the ‘link’ button in the edit page – but when I went to preview my ‘recipie’ page, the list was there, but I couldn’t cick on the titles and go to the posts.
