How do you make huge changes to blog without being live?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am in the process of wanting to change my blog drastically; however, I do not want to make any of the other material that is currently on there go away at this time. Are there any recommendations to being able to produce essentially an entire new look and feel without having to lose an audience, material, or the blog availability?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

It’s rather difficult. Usually you will be recommended to set the site as Private while working on it, but then you will lose traffic in the meanwhile.

Looks like the only way is to export your content (you will get an XML file), then create a new test site on WordPress.com, then import that XML file into the new test site.

You now have a new test site with your old contents, on which you can work on the changes. Set the site to private to prevent search engine from crawling it and people from seeing it.

When you’re done, you will have to manually do the changes on the main site again, mimicking the changes you do on the test site.

This is tedious, I know! But there does not seem to be another way to do this on WordPress.com.
