How do you make paragraphs if you are still using the classic?

I typed in paragraphs and the preview shows them as ONE paragraph. In addition it won’t let me select paragraph or heading sizes. Thanks for any help.

  • Hi there,

Can you give us the URL of the site you need help with? And also the title of the post/page you’re working on where you don’t see paragraph breaks.

To create a new paragraph in either editor, you just press the Enter key on your keyboard once.

    Thanks!

The original attempted post I deleted thinking to start fresh. Later in the afternoon yesterday I attempted a different post and it worked fine. But today, when I updated a post it deleted almost all the spacing. Here’s what it now looks like: https://santabarbaraastrologer.wordpress.com/2020/07/22/leo-2020-full-new-moon-galactic-center/

Here’s what it did/should look like:

    Thanks again!

  • Okay, looking at the revision history for that post, the problem is that the post never had paragraphs, as a paragraph is determined in HTML.

In HTML, a paragraph is indicated by a p tag, and that is created automatically when you press Enter on your keyboard.

But in the original version of your post I don’t see any p tags. Instead, I see a bunch of br tags – those indicate line breaks, and are created when you make a new line by pressing Shift-Enter.

To create paragraphs in this way, you’d have needed to press Shift-Enter twice each time, and that matches what I see in the HTML, with two br tags appearing next to each other each time. The problem is HTML doesn’t like br tags being used in this way, so I’m guessing when you edited the post, the editor stripped those out as invalid HTML.

Do you recall of you pressed Enter or Shift-Enter when creating this post?

Edit the post again. Position your cursor where you want a new paragraph to start, and press only the Enter key, once. Then update the post. Does the paragraph break appear in the published version?

If it sticks this time, go through the rest of the post adding back the paragraphs. If it doesn’t stick, let me know :)

    Hi, Kokkieh!

In the past if I pressed Enter it gave me a paragraph.

When I’m trying to make paragraphs, I’ve tried the visual editor and html, I’m not having any luck. Pressing enter doesn’t make a paragraph or space between sentences.

    Next, please?

Yes, it does. I just press enter and have a new paragraph. I suggest that you clean up all the code in that text and then start formatting it again (there is a button in the editor that does this).

Hmm…since I typically haven’t used code, just the visual editor, it’s hard to think the code needs cleaning, but I’m willing to give it at try. Where is this magical button please? What is it called? Thanks!
