How do you make WordPress not hijack certain address under the same domain?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a Google Apps account, and use the mail, contacts and calendar aspects of it. My domain was purchased while I was creating Google Apps account, through Go Daddy.

When I was maintaining my blog with Squarespace, mapping the domain didn’t result in every URL address under my domain being hijacked by Squarespace. For example, http://www.my-blog.com would be redirected to the Squarespace blog, but mail.my-blog.com would be spared and remain connected to my Google Apps mail.

Is the same kind of URL scheme feasible in WordPress.com?

  • Hi there. Do you mean you want to use a custom domain you already own with a WordPress.com site? To connect that domain to WordPress.com you’ll need the domain mapping upgrade. You can also map your WordPress.com site to a subdomain on that custom domain, e.g. blog.yourdomain.com. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/

It is also possible to use Google Apps with a WordPress.com site on a custom domain, though I’m not sure if you can do that with a mapped domain: https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/adding-google-apps-to-your-site/

Does that answer your question, or am I missing you here?

I own a custom domain, and mapped my WordPress.com blog to that custom domain.

The thing is, while I used to use mail.custom-domain.com to point to Google App’s mail, it is no longer available as *.custom-domain.com is directed to my WordPress.com.

What I want is to have the ability to point mail.custom-domain.com back to Google App’s mail.

  • Thanks for clarifying. I’m going to tag this for staff to follow up, as I don’t know whether you can use subdomains with a mapped domain in this way. Please be patient while waiting for their response.

    @wonblee,

You’ll want to keep the * CNAME record, in case someone visits “bogus-subdomain.customdomain.com” but you can setup an additional “mail.customdomain.com” CNAME record for your access to Google Apps mail
    Visit here:

    http://wordpress.com/my-domains

Click “Edit” next to your domain mapping, then the “Edit DNS” tab.

Add a new CNAME record. In the first field use “mail.yourcustomdomain.com” (subsituting your custom domain name, or course) and in the second use the address for your Google Apps access to which mail.yourcustomdomain.com will redirect.

    @ alexjgustafson,

It doesn’t work. When I tried, I get a “This record cannot be saved. Please check the highlighted fields below and try again.” error. The highlight points to the Google Apps email URL which looks like http://mail.google.com/a/my-google-apps-domain.com.

    What gives?

CNAME records can’t point to sub-directories (URLs with / in them), but they can point to sub-domains (like mail.google.com instead of just google.com).

Google Apps will let you setup a custom sub-domain in your admin console:

    https://support.google.com/a/answer/53340?hl=en&ref_topic=4388229

After setting up that sub-domain, this is what should be entered in the 2nd field instead of the URL you provided.

    @ alexjgustafson,

Although Google Apps allows me to set up a custom sub-domain to my domain, it will look like mail.my-custom-domain.com.

Are you saying that I should create a CNAME that will make mail.my-custom-domain.com to mail.my-custom-domain.com?

  • Unknown's avatar

The second field needs to point to Google, not to your domain. After you setup ‘mail.my-custom-domain.com’ in Google Apps, create a CNAME record here at WordPress.com following Google’s Instructions in step 5:

Follow instructions that appear to add a CNAME record with your domain host. add a record for each service whose address you’re customizing. For example, to create the Gmail address mail.yourdomain.com, add a CNAME record that points mail to ghs.googlehosted.com

So the CNAME should look like this when setting it up (replace ‘my-custom-domain’ with your domain name of course.)
