How do you switch our current domain name over to our wordpress site?

    I currently have the website http://www.thehuntergroup.ca through Shaw Media. My wordpress site http://www.debrahunter.wordpress.com I have also converted to now have website components. I would like to take my domain name that I am using through Shaw and use it as the debrahunter.wordpress.com. Shaw technical support is confused about this and we are hoping that you can help. We want to use http://www.thehuntergroup.ca as our wordpress address. Any help that you can give would be appreciated.

    WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible.

    Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

    Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

    Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet.     There is no www in your WordPress.com URL. There may or may not be one in your Shaw URL: you’d best find out before tinkering with domains.

    All you need to do is buy domain mapping and change the nameservers. here are the instructions. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    Thanks for you help.

    We actually decided to set up a new domain through wordpress.

    I have a question. How long does it take for the name to take affect once it’s registered? Right now whenever I type in the new web address debra-hunter.com it says the site does not exist.

    The old address when you type it in; debrahunter.wordpress.com works and the header above has debra-hunter.com.

    Is there something that we have to do or does this just take time?

    It can take as long as 72 hours for DNS changes to become widely available. If you’re still not seeing your site loading at eglegaliauskaite.com, please wait a few more hours, clear your browser cache, and try again. http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clear-your-cache-and-cookies

    Your URLs is correctly redirecting for me. I am in Canada. It is not unusual for the last place to flush their DNS caches to be your own ISP. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during this stage is to be patient.
