How does "dot shop" domain work?

  I spent $30 buying the domain “mypaperplane.shop”, but turns out this address will relocate me to “mypaperplaneshop.wordpress.com”, a domain under WordPress.
  So how does this “.shop” work?
  Isn’t this “.shop” suppose to be the domain I spent $30 for? Why is “wordpress.com” is still after my address? Can anyone please explain this to me? I’m a beginner of all these, and I’m lost… Thanks.

  Hi there,

  If you buy only a domain, the domain will redirect to your free WordPress.com address.

  If you want your WordPress.com site to appear at your custom domain instead of at the free address, that requires a paid plan:

  https://wordpress.com/support/domains/register-domain/

  Hi kokkieh,

  Thanks a lot for the feedback!
  I just upgraded it to a Personal Plan, in which a custom domain name is included.
  But the address is still showing as “mypaperplaneshop.wordpress.com.”.
  How do I change it to the way I prefer, “mypaperplane.shop” ?

  Hi there,

  It looks like you canceled your domain mypaperplane.shop.

  Did you want to use a different domain?

  If the cancellation was unintentional, please let us know here as soon as possible so that we can restore the domain for you.

  Also, for future reference, please avoid canceling a domain that you wish to use in the future as you risk losing the domain permanently if a domain is canceled and not restored within a short timeframe.

  The reason for the cancelation was because we thought it was for “mypaperplaneshop.wordpress.com”, instead of the one we prefer (without wordpress at the end).
  So how do we restore this domain?

  And another question, since we didn’t get the custom domain from the first purchase,$30, what exactly was the payment for?

  Basically, you had paid for just the domain. We allow our customers to pay for and register only a domain without a paid plan if they want to own the domain before they are ready to build a site (or purchase a paid plan).

  However, in order to use that domain with a WordPress.com site (and have the domain load the site without redirecting to the WordPress.com address), the site must be upgraded to a paid plan.

  Now that you have upgraded to a paid plan (which includes a domain for the first year), I’ve restored the domain for you. Please follow the instructions above to set your custom domain as primary so that it stops redirecting to the WordPress.com address.
