How does early renewal for a domain name work?

I needed to update my payment information for my upcoming domain name renewal. (lisaweg.com) Because that screen was not working correctly, I chose to just renew early. My expiration date is supposed to be April 17, 2014. Because I renewed early — my new expiration date is March 20, 2015 — meaning I lost almost a month of time I originally paid for with the first subscription. That isn’t right — the new renewal date should be April 17, 2015 because the first one is still in effect. I’m being penalized for early renewal.

    Hello there Lisa!

When I look at your account, I see that your expiration date for Domain Mapping and Registration is 4/17/2015.

I think what you’re seeing in your account is perhaps this note: “This upgrade will be renewed automatically in 12 months on March 18, 2015.”

Renewal is different than expiration. Auto-renews happen a month before a domain actually expires. This way, if there are any problems with our user’s accounts, we are able to notify them 30 days before their domains expire so a solution can be reached. This helps us protect your domain registration.

If you do not want to have the auto-renew subscription on your account, you can visit Store → My Upgrades to turn it off. Then, in the future, you can manually renew.

I hope this helps! Best wishes to you.
