How does hosting a blog on wordpress affect the SEO?

Having been told by our host that wordpress is not supported (web.com) on their windows option, I am attempting instead to set up wordpress blog for a company I do side work for. The needs for the blog are simple, but the CEO is concerned about having the blog on wordpress.com, and the main site on the company domain.
We wanted to host it on our website so we could receive the advantages of SEO, inbound content marketing and social media exposure features, etc., etc.
If we host on Worpress, do we lose those features. i.e. It is his understanding that if done properly on a website it greatly increases visibility with search results on all the major search engines vs. not having the content directly on one’s web pages. Is this true? So, wouldn’t we then lose this significant benefit?
