How does Spearhead Blocks move audio files to main blog page?
-
I’m trying out the audio feature on Spearhead Blocks, the theme for my blog. I’ve made a test recording using the audio block for my post “Pies and Parking Lots.” I read somewhere that the theme is designed to take the post’s audio block and put it on the home page that lists all of the blog posts. It doesn’t do that. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
I read somewhere that the theme is designed to take the post’s audio block and put it on the home page that lists all of the blog posts.
I’m not sure I understand this part. Are you looking to have the audio player visible in all posts on the homepage?
If so, you can edit the template to add that block to your index page:
The Index and All Archives templates are used to display blog posts on pages of your site. This guide will show you how to customize these templates. About the Index and All Archives Templates If your site uses a theme that supports the site editor, you can access and edit the templates. A quick way to determine if your site uses the site editor is to check for Appearance → Editor in yourDoes that help?

staff-mckluskey, thank you! That support page is what I’ve needed but didn’t know existed. I would end up making changes to templates and wondering why they looked clunky. Now I’ll start here.
I still can’t get it to work in this case, though. I love the fact that Automattic’s Spearhead Block theme is all blocks. I can get my hands dirty. (I last worked with WordPress in, like, 2008). The block theme suggests that it has sound in the index template already, but I guess I’m getting the wrong impression? Here’s a screenshot showing the sound blocks on the blog homepage (also shown in the theme’s live demo):

Figuring I needed to do it myself, I went to Appearance > Edit > Templates > Index and added an audio block between the text block and the featured image block, and clicked “Save”:

I tried it out with a sample post, writing text and uploading an audio file to an audio block:

The blog page itself looked great when I published it. But the homage still won’t show the audio player:

I went back to check how the index template looks now, and it seems right:

I’m sure I’m missing something simple, but I can’t figure it out. Thanks for your help!

Hey there,
I’m glad to see you’re ok with getting your hands dirty there!
The query block wouldn’t bring in the audio block, into the blog post excerpt, and that’s usually the case with blog post blocks and theme templates.
Are you running a podcast out of curiosity, the reason why I ask is because you may want to experiment with a podcast block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/podcast-player-block/ which shows episodes in the row – similarly to what you’re looking to do.
I hope this helps!

The query block looks so cool!
But I still can’t get Spearhead Blocks to do what its theme demo shows. How does Automattic’s theme pull this off?

To move audio files to the main blog page using Spearhead Blocks, you can follow these general steps:
- Access the Spearhead Blocks editor: Log in to your website’s admin panel or content management system (CMS) and navigate to the Spearhead Blocks editor or the section where you manage your blog posts.
- Create a new blog post or edit an existing one: Choose the blog post where you want to include the audio files or create a new blog post specifically for this purpose.
- Insert a media block: Within the blog post editor, look for the option to insert a media block or add media content. This can typically be done through a toolbar or an insert element button.
- Upload or select the audio file: Click on the media block and select the option to upload or choose an audio file from your computer. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the upload or selection process.
- Customize the audio player: Depending on the options provided by Spearhead Blocks or your CMS, you may have the ability to customize the appearance and functionality of the audio player. Adjust the settings according to your preferences, such as the player size, autoplay, loop, or other playback features.
- Position the audio player on the main blog page: Once you have added the audio file to the blog post, save or publish the post. It should now appear on the main blog page, depending on the design and layout of your website. The audio player may be displayed as part of the blog post excerpt or as a dedicated audio player element.
This issue also having with me in this blog types of camping styles but you can see everthing is perfect in it.

Thanks, landonweston, but I’ve done all that, and the audio files don’t appear on the homepage. I checked out your site–which looks incredible, by the way–but I don’t see any audio files on the blog’s homepage. I think you also have it set to show the entire post in the homepage, while my homepage shows only a summary of each blog post (like the Spearhead Block homepage screenshot above).

Hello there @xegnp !
For the Spearhead Blocks theme, the ‘Audio Block’ is not added automatically as dynamic content, taken from the layout in use in the Template.
The demo page shows a page created dynamically by adding Blog posts and their Audio content manually, to a ‘Blog’ page, instead of that page using a template which automatically pulls the ‘Audio Block’ content in that post to the excerpt for that post, onto the Blog page.
I hope this has been helpful, but feel free to reach out if you have any further questions!
