How does the Domain Mapping work (and how can I replicate it)
-
Hi,
So we used to have our blog hosted on a wordpress.com site and we paid for domain mapping so that our subdomain blog.ashleigh-burwood.co.uk would map to our blog. (note there is no hosting associated with the .co.uk domain, just a DNS zone file)
We are in the middle of migrating our blog to a self hosted version which resides on blog.ashleigh-burwood.com and I am have a real problem getting the domain mapping working.
We have changed the CNAME entry for the blog.ashleigh-burwood.co.uk subdomain to point to the shared hosting IP address for blog.ashleigh-burwood.com, but the blog is not visible, just a blank page.
In talking with the registrar for the .com they tell me that the only way to get the domain mapping done is via the hosting package associated with the .co.uk. Of course we don’t have hosting associated with that domain and we have never needed it (wordpress’ domain mapping took care of it for us and oh so simply!)
So how or what do I need to do to recreate or mimic the domain mapping functionality we paid for? I’ve tried various wordpress plugins for domain mapping which have not worked. I have tried various .htaccess redirects which were probably all wrong as they didn’t work and I’m not even sure with the right rewrite rule it would even work.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? I’ve got 5 years of blog posts that are now inaccessible via their original URL as they aren’t there any more (they’re on the .com now!) and I would really like to get the redirect in place so that our blog doesn’t look like it’s moved at all.
Many thanks in advance

Hi,
Your domain mapping here actually doesn’t change settings at your new host.
We have changed the CNAME entry for the blog.ashleigh-burwood.co.uk subdomain to point to the shared hosting IP address for blog.ashleigh-burwood.com, but the blog is not visible, just a blank page.
For an IP address, please use an A record instead of a CNAME (think CNAMEs point to names… and an IP address is not a name.)
Also, please be sure your new host and your installation are properly set up to handle the subdomain. Your host will need to help with that, and you’ll also need to be sure the wp-admin > settings > general have the correct address in your new installation.
If you need more help with WordPress.org (self hosting and self supported) go to wordpress.org/support
Cheers :)
