how does the format differ between wordpress.com and domain owned sites?

im not very techy, is the format the same for wordpress.com site and if i buy my own domain?

When the use the domain upgrade, everything stays the same — except for the domain.
Your site will still be available at its present URL, but visitors will be automatically forwarded to your shiny new domain name.
