I am trying to find out if I should map my existing domain to my blog. I could just have a link to it. What is the purpose?
How does the maping change the traffic speed of my page? What does it do and what is it good for?

Domain mapping will not change the speed of your page.

If you choose use our domain mapping upgrade, one of the benefits is that it makes it easier to move your blog if you ever decide to leave WordPress.com because you’ll be able to keep all of the same URLs.

However, domain mapping is great for users who are concerned about branding and want to keep a consistent feel throughout their website. For example, if you already have an existing website, you might want to map a subdomain — such as blog.exampledomain.com — so that visitors to your site stay within your domain, rather than knowing that your blog is hosted elsewhere.
