I saw that opening a blog and hosting a domain is free for a year in WordPress. Then why charge for a plan? I want to understand.

    WP.com: Yes

    Hey hey hello hello!

For starters, some benefits of using a paid plan compared to a free plan are outlined here:
    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

That said, while opening a blog is free with WordPress.com, the perks to paid plans over free plans include and are not limited to:

    – Provision of one custom domain name/address (free plans are limited to being “example.wordpress.com”, or whatever domain the user already owns)
    – Access to a many more website Themes (templates)
    – Removal of Sponsored Posts (ads)

    – Permission to custom CSS (and Javascript in some cases)
    – Plugin Access
    – Monetization options
    – Real-time support (whereas free sites can only refer to these forums)
    .. and more.

If there’s anything else we can clarify, feel free to ask! Either way, I hope this helps!
