how far can I push my theme?

hi all
I’m very new to this blog thing and have set my photo blog… http://desaturate.wordpress.com/
I like the general layout of the theme, but I’d like to know what’s possible to make it a little more stylish. I’m inspired by this design here… http://news.knotan.com/#home it’s a very similar structure to mine but with subtle style… can something like this be achieved with my limited knowledge?

You need the paid CSS upgrade to change things like colours and backgrounds of your theme.
In the link you have posted, the obvious things that you can change without the paid upgrade are the banner and the side bar. You can also sticky a post at the top, like the news thing knotan has. But if you really want to change the colours, you will have to pay the upgrade.

And the CSS upgrade is not recommended unless you are already familiar with CSS. There is no official support for it and only a couple of people in the forums are well versed in it. You can play with the preview all you want prior to purchasing the upgrade, to see if you can achieve what you want to have.

CSS can be tricky to start with, but as a relative newcomer myself through a mixture of Google and a few books on basic CSS I have managed to grasp the basics. The excellent ‘preview’ facility on WordPress gives you a good opportunity to see if what you want to achieve is possible within the structure of your chosen theme.
If you want to have a quick look at what I’ve managed as a relative beginner (only a couple of months) my site uses the ‘Freshy’ theme with my own CSS modifications.

You might also want to check out the Monotone theme – its designed as a photoblogging theme.

That’s too many pictures on the main page because it might slow down the page for people with dial-up. But at least you resized them so the pictures aren’t that heavy to load.

I’m trying to keep to a page a month… I’m new to the blog thing… things should calm down a bit from now on… do people still have dial-up?

Yes, not everyone lives in privileged countries with high speed ADSL.
And a page a month might not be good because you won’t attract regular readers. People could forget about your blog. But I guess it all depends on what kind of readers you’re trying to attract and etc.

With my business clients I advise them that three posts a week is optimal, one a week is minimum. Most people will, frankly, forget you within 20 days.

Yeah many still have dial-up because they either can’t afford it or that’s the only thing around where they live. And many still use IE also despite all the security risks.
