How get a new domain to take traffic to an earlier domain as my primary domain?

Your language is confusing me. I already own the domain: coachingtips4clergy.com. I wanted to add another domain to that: coachingtipsforclergy.com (with “for” spelled out, so that if anyone types “coaching tips for clergy” into their browser, they get directed to coachingtips4clergy.com

So I registered and paid for “coachingtipsforclergy.com” and clicked on the button “add this domain.” But then what? Is what I’m trying to do called “mapping to a domain” or “adding in a subdomain” or what (either of those would seem to apply)?

Right now it does not appear I have achieved my objective. The names and instructions are less than intuitive. Nor is it clear which url I should reference below – the new one or the original one which I want to be primary.
    Blog url: http://coachingtipsforclergy.wordpress.com/

  • It doesn’t look like you completed the registration.

Basically, you’re just registering a new domain. To do that, add it via Store -> Domains in your blog’s Dashboard.

Okay. I think I did exactly what you said to do. I completed registering and got a message that it’s all registered. Then I had a screen that showed 3 domains: coachingtips4clergy.com — coachingtipsforclergy.com — coachingtips4clergy.wordpress.com.

There was a dot in the circle of coachingtips4clergy.com, which seemed to indicate this was my primary blog. Therefore i typed in coachingtips4clergy.com and hit “add this domain.” What resulted was a new blog with a new theme with a new home page saying “Hello World.”

So (and I’m assuming I haven’t paid for coachingtipsforclergy.com twice in all this), what do I do now to get coachingtipsforclergy NOT as a separate new blog but automatically redirecting anyone who enters it to coachingtips4clergy.com, with that theme and all else I have on it?

It looks like the site coachingtipsforclergy.wordpress.com is now the one that has the title Coaching Tips For Clergy. Don’t want that. Don’t even want coachingtipsforclergy.wordpress.com (unless for some odd reason it’s necessary to have that in order to do the rest).

Now I looked again at the screen when I went to coachingtips4clergy.com. I went to the dashboard, I clicked on Store, then on Domain, got the screen with 3 domains (the three above). But I see down below a statement I hadn’t noticed before. It says my primary domain is coachingtips4clergy.com (which is exactly what I want it to be) and that the other two domains will automatically redirect to the primary domain. I recall reading somewhere that the whole business may take up to 72 hours to totally complete. So is that where I’m at? Is everything just as I want it; just wait for the system to catch up?

  • http://coachingtips4clergy.com/ appears to be working properly.

It can take domain changes up to 72 hours (though usually much less) to propagate to your ISP. Unfortunately, we have no control over this as it all depends on how often your ISP refreshes their DNS cache.

    Dear Macmanx,

The problem is not solved. You are correct that http://coachingtips4clergy.com is working correctly. However, I know that someone will make reference to that primary site, and some people hearing the reference will not think “coachingtips4” but will think “coachingtipsfor” (in other words, “for” spelled out.)

That being so, they will type in http://coachingtipsforclergy.com. If they do that, I want them to be taken automatically to http://coachingtips4clergy.com.

However, when I type in http://coachingtipsforclergy.com I get taken to an entirely new screen and site. Is not 72 hours now up? Does the weekend count? I appreciate your attempt to help, but the solution I want has not yet been achieved.

    Thank you,
    Mark

  • It looks like you already have both set on the same blog.

If you’re still seeing a different site at coachingtipsforclergy.com try clearing your browser’s cache.
