  you are using the free platform for your site. to be able to monetize your site, you will need to upgrade so that you own your own domain and from there can add ad banners that will then if you receive enough views, will pay out.

  However, regardless of upgrade, you cannot run your own advertising.

  And not all of those methods require you to upgrade from the free plan. It’s only if you wish to apply to the WordAds program that will you need to have a custom domain.
