how i can make my wordpress site GDPR compliant since i am in the US, and what happens if you’re site is found as not being compliant? Do they come to the US and detain me and send me to prison or have the US put me in prison or something? How could i know for sure that my website is for sure GDPR compliant to any European visitors?

  • Hi there,

We cannot tell you exactly what you need to do to comply with the GDPR, as we are not your attorneys. The account you’re using to post here also does not own any sites on WordPress.com, so I assume you have a site using the open source WordPress software, which we don’t control.

The only way to know for sure what you need to do to be compliant is to consult a lawyer who specialises in this law, but if you’re just a blogger who doesn’t collect personal info about users to your site beyond that which is necessary to power your site’s features, for example, commenting, and you don’t use that information for anything else, GDPR is unlikely to have much of an effect on how you run your site, and it is highly unlikely you’ll get sent to prison.

You can find more info on the tools that are available in the WordPress software you’re using here:

You can also ask in those forums, but it’s likely they will tell you the same thing I told you here – if you’re truly concerned, speak to a lawyer.

@upwardsup Just in case you missed it, you also received a couple of answers to your question in your earlier forum thread as well: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/should-i-delete-my-site-since-i-dont-know-if-its-gdpr-complient/

I’m just using a free site here on WordPress.com it’s Castleofwonder.wordpress.com. But I may delete it and my account since I have no way of knowing if it’s in compliance with the GDPR. I don’t have money for a lawyer it’s only supposed to be a personal blog.

I guess I’ll just delete my account and site. There’s no point in using it if I’m just going to get into trouble.
