How is anyone expected to get started with this!

So I’ve set up my site online and now what do I do? I have 30+ years of IT and I find the information on wordpress is worse than useless. I can’t even remove ‘Welcome to WordPress’ that dominates my 1st page. And a google search for advice reveals 2 things – gems such as ‘are you using plug in caching?’ or videos of a dashboard that doesn’t exist in my site admin. Or I get directed (after a ton of searching) to an app that I apparently need for my laptop and Windows only to see a ‘5 minute install’ take over an hour to download which it only does partially.
And no there is nothing wrong with my setup, my bb (1GB) or my firewalls as every other thing i do on through the internet works fine. After a frustrating 4 weeks of trying to find out how to get started without technical advice I don’t want or need (no I don’t need a server yet as I am testing the useability of the software that sets the sites up 1st) or without simple plain English steps I am ready to give up. So this is your last chance WordPress, convince me that you are the service of choice for both personal and business sites and blogs (both of which I need).

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

So just to add to my frustrations. Chased through a whole load of ‘getting started’ tutorials and all the rest. All very interesting including drawing diagrams of the structure of your blog, etc. The only problem – how on earth can any of this be executed? Particularly if having set up a basic site with a theme you cannot even change default text?

WordPress are trying hard to make starting a new site easier by installing “placeholder” posts and titles and images that just need replacing with your own content. More often that not this seems to cause confusion.

Often, until you actually produce some content of posts and pages and images it is difficult to see what the site will look like/set up menus etc. it is easy to delete stuff if it doesn’t look right and to try out different themes.

Although the “happiness engineers” here prefer people to use the “new” editor, perhaps with your 30 years IT experience you might get along better using the “old” editor which you can find here:-

PS: Most of the UToob videos etc about WordPress refer to the self-hosted .org version which often works in different ways to WordPress.com here.

So you cannot tell me how to change ‘Welcome to WordPress’ in simple steps? Why on earth would I build a business site with you?

(BTW I think I’ve worked it out and it involves customising and hacking the HTML!)

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not WordPress. I was just trying to offer some encouragement. You don’t have to “hack” anything. Have you clicked on “My Site” and “Customize”.

No, it isn’t saving. What is the point of keep sending and advertising sites that ‘look good’ where this content has been removed or changed to new people when we cannot change it?

  • Unknown's avatar

It involves writing the first blog post. No customising, hacking or rocket science required.

  • Unknown's avatar

No it doesn’t. It involves changing the Themed Options in Customizer. And that isn’t the point. Why would I want to start writing a blog in which all I’ve been able to do is take a page with ‘WORDPRESS’ all over it and things like under ‘About’, ‘This is where you put details of what the blog is about’ and not do anything with it apart from add a photo? That is not a ‘theme’ it is a pro forma. A theme only involves ‘look and feel’ and allows customizable content whether photos or text. It doesn’t pick and choose which content you can change. Have you carried out any useability testing on this? I’m just shocked that in this day and age this is considered a ‘good’ tool.

Rocket Science involves building a container, aiming it and blowing it up after carrying out a bit of maths on trajectory and thrust.

    Did you look at:-

Have you looked at your template posts to change/edit/delete them.
