How is he placing his adsense at this site?

  Here is the link: http://www.college-startup.com/

  See how he has the very small and not intrusive adsense at the end of his first two blog entiries on the front page, and then when you hit “continue reading” button the same ad isn’t in the middle of the article.

  This is what I want, but haven’t been able to reproduce it with wordpress and adsense plugins…

  That’s a self-hosted blog (using WordPress software) so the blogger is free to have ads. If that’s something you’d like to persue, you can get the free software and information about hosting companies at http://wordpress.org
