How long does it take to release a domain?

I released my domain this evening. I need to buy it on another site. I know for a fact it’s not taken yet because it hasn’t yet been released onto the Internet. I’m wondering how long that takes?

Hi there,
Did you read the warning on the Cancel Domain page saying you shouldn’t proceed if you still want to use the domain? The reason we show that warning is because cancelled domains are not released immediately and can take anything from a few days to over a year before they are available again.
As you cancelled your domain a day after you bought it, it should be released by the end of this week, but the moment it’s released anyone will be able to buy it so you run the risk of completely losing the domain if you’re not first.
Alternatively, I can try restoring the domain to your account. Then I can move it to a different WordPress.com site for you if you still want to use it here, or I can help you point it to another service where you want to use it.

That would be incredible!!! I’m trying to move it to squarespace though, does that hurt it?

Okay, your domain has been restored and is once again in your account.
You will need to wait until you have owned the domain for 60 days until you can transfer it away from us and to Squarespace completely, but in the meantime you can map it to them. You do that by adding their IP addresses to your domain at My Site ->Domains. You can get full instructions for what has to be done on our end, as well as a link to Squarespace’s instructions for this, here:
Let me know if you need any help adding those records to your domain. Most of them are standard, but one of the records is unique to your domain and you need to get that from Squarespace directly before you can add it here.
