How long does it take to release domain when account is cancelled?

I recently created a Premium account on WordPress.com with a custom domain.
I didn’t realise the difference between .com and .org and the theme I wanted wasn’t available on .com, which is why I cancelled.
I decided it was best to set up the domain with another host, so I asked for the full refund on the upgraded account. The chat person I spoke to said it could take up to 10 days for the domain to be released, but I decided to take the chance.

This morning I’ve had an email with the subject of ‘Verification required’. The body says ‘The following domain names will be suspended in 15 days’.

Will it be released to me in 10 days or 15? Thanks!

    Hey clsibbick,

Unfortunately there is no way of telling when it will be released again. It can take a few weeks for a domain name to become available after a cancellation, so I would advise you keep checking regularly until it is released in order to secure your domain again.

You may find this helpful too, It will give you the status of your domain:

Any more questions let me know

Thanks Lucas. That’s helpful to know.
In hindsight I should’ve kept the hosting with WordPress.com!
    I’ll keep checking :)

  • Hi there,

As you cancelled on the same day you bought it, it should be released again by next week. If you want to keep it here on WordPress.com I can also still restore it for you provided I do it in the next couple of days. Once it’s restored you can map it to a different hosting provider where you have your self-hosted site.

If you’d prefer to restore it rather than wait it out, let me know.
